After a celebrant-led marriage in New South Wales, couples usually talk about two different certificates.
1. The ceremonial certificate
This is the certificate you receive on the day.
It is a keepsake and a record of the ceremony, but it is not the official NSW certificate used for many formal processes.
2. The official marriage certificate
This is the certificate issued by NSW Births, Deaths and Marriages after the marriage has been registered.
This is the one often needed for:
- passport updates
- some name changes
- formal proof of marriage
