Registry-style ceremonies by civil celebrants, not a government registry office. No fuss, no frills, no wedding. Just paperwork.

Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM) in Newcastle

The Notice of Intended Marriage, or NOIM, is the form that starts the legal marriage process in Australia.

If you want to get married in Newcastle, your celebrant must receive the NOIM at least one month before the marriage date.

The easiest way to prepare it is with NOIM Easy.

What NOIM Easy does

NOIM Easy walks you through the form step by step, then creates a completed PDF ready to print.

You can also email a copy directly to your celebrant if you want.

The main timing rule

The NOIM must usually be given to your celebrant:

  • at least one month before the marriage
  • not more than 18 months before the marriage

The date that matters is when the celebrant receives the NOIM, not when you first enquire or pay.

What you usually need to complete it

  • your full legal names
  • your dates and places of birth
  • your current addresses
  • your occupations
  • your parents’ names
  • details of any earlier marriage

It helps to have your ID and supporting documents ready at the same time.

Who can witness the NOIM

The NOIM must be witnessed by an authorised witness.

Common examples include:

  • a registered marriage celebrant
  • a justice of the peace
  • a lawyer
  • a medical practitioner
  • a police officer
  • a notary public in the right circumstances

Remote witnessing by audio-visual link is also possible in some situations under the current law. If you want to do that, ask us early so it is handled properly.

What happens after we receive it

Once we have your NOIM:

  • the one-month notice period starts
  • we check the paperwork and supporting documents
  • we work through any missing details with you
  • we confirm the date, time, and place once the paperwork is in and we know availability

Important point

The NOIM is not the marriage itself.

You still need the ceremony, the legal wording, the signatures, and the witnesses on the day.

Common questions

How early can we do the NOIM?

Can we do the NOIM from overseas?

Can you help if we are confused?
