Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM) in Newcastle
The Notice of Intended Marriage, or NOIM, is the form that starts the legal marriage process in Australia.
If you want to get married in Newcastle, your celebrant must receive the NOIM at least one month before the marriage date.

The main timing rule
The NOIM must usually be given to your celebrant:
- at least one month before the marriage
- not more than 18 months before the marriage
The date that matters is when the celebrant receives the NOIM, not when you first enquire or pay.
What you usually need to complete it
- your full legal names
- your dates and places of birth
- your current addresses
- your occupations
- your parents’ names
- details of any earlier marriage
It helps to have your ID and supporting documents ready at the same time.
Who can witness the NOIM
The NOIM must be witnessed by an authorised witness.

- a justice of the peace

- a medical practitioner
- a police officer
- a notary public in the right circumstances

Important point
The NOIM is not the marriage itself.
You still need the ceremony, the legal wording, the signatures, and the witnesses on the day.
