Overseas Marriage Recognition in Australia

An overseas marriage is generally recognised in Australia if:

• it was valid where it took place, and
• it would also be recognised as valid under Australian law

Australia does not usually re-register it

If you married overseas, Australia does not usually create a new Australian marriage registration for you.

You usually rely on:

• the overseas marriage certificate
• an official English translation if needed
• any extra authentication a receiving organisation asks for

Many couples choose to do the legal marriage simply in Australia and keep the overseas event as the celebration.
