Overseas Marriage Recognition in Australia
An overseas marriage is generally recognised in Australia if:
- it was valid where it took place, and
- it would also be recognised as valid under Australian law
Australia does not usually re-register it
If you married overseas, Australia does not usually create a new Australian marriage registration for you.
You usually rely on:
- the overseas marriage certificate
- an official English translation if needed
- any extra authentication a receiving organisation asks for
If you are not married yet
Many couples choose to do the legal marriage simply in Australia and keep the overseas event as the celebration.
If that is your plan, this site is for the legal marriage part only.
