Interpreters and Document Translations

If either person does not understand English well enough for the marriage process, you may need an interpreter.

If your documents are not in English, you will usually need official English translations.

When an interpreter is needed

The important point is understanding.

Each person must be able to:

• understand what marriage means
• freely consent
• follow the legal words and questions used in the process

Basic interpreter rules

At a marriage ceremony:

• the interpreter cannot be one of the parties to the marriage
• the interpreter must give the required declaration and certificate

Document translations

Translations are commonly needed for:

• birth certificates
• divorce papers
• death certificates
• name change documents

Bring both:

• the original document
• the English translation

Do not leave this until the last minute

If translated documents or an interpreter are needed, organise that well before the ceremony date.
