Registry-style ceremonies by civil celebrants, not a government registry office. No fuss, no frills, no wedding. Just paperwork.

ID Requirements for Marriage

Before you can get married, your celebrant needs to be satisfied about your identity and your date and place of birth.

What most couples use

Usually you will need either:

  1. a current passport, or
  2. a birth certificate plus current photo ID

Photo ID examples

If you are using a birth certificate, the photo ID is often something like:

  • an Australian or overseas driver’s licence
  • a proof of age card
  • an official photo identification card

If you have been married before

You will also need evidence that the earlier marriage ended, such as:

  • a divorce order
  • a death certificate of your previous spouse

If your name has changed

You may also need documents showing the name change, such as:

  • a change of name certificate
  • an earlier marriage certificate
  • another formal name change document

If documents are not in English

You will usually need:

  • the original document
  • an official English translation

If you are unsure, sort this out early rather than waiting until the ceremony date.

What is usually not enough on its own

  • a Medicare card
  • bank cards
  • uncertified photocopies
  • screenshots instead of proper documents
